Kamlesh Khunti is Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester. He leads a programme of work on cardiometabolic diseases and multiple long-term conditions (MLTC).
He was recently appointed as Director of the first NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions and is Co-lead for the Cross NIHR Collaboration for Multiple Long-Term Conditions. He is the national NIHR ARC Lead for MLTC and was awarded the Commander of the order of the British Empire (CBE).
Professor Khunti's research focuses on improving the prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in primary care settings. His work particularly addresses the challenges of managing multiple long-term conditions and reducing health disparities among different ethnic populations.
As Director of the first NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions, Professor Khunti is leading innovative research to address the global challenge of managing multiple chronic conditions. This work has significant implications for healthcare systems worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Professor Khunti serves as Co-lead for the Cross NIHR Collaboration for Multiple Long-Term Conditions, bringing together researchers and clinicians from across the NIHR infrastructure to address the complex challenges of managing multiple long-term conditions through coordinated research and implementation efforts.
Through his leadership of the Leicester Diabetes Centre and various research units, Professor Khunti has made substantial contributions to the evidence base for diabetes and cardiovascular disease management. His work has influenced clinical guidelines and healthcare policies both nationally and internationally.
